As the last stage of evaluation for all vaccines and therapeutics, clinical trials are a critical part of the drug development process. Clinical trials, by definition, test a vaccine in people of ages ranging from infants to older adults. Generally speaking, the purpose of a clinical trial is to evaluate whether a vaccine candidate is safe and effective in defined target populations. Clinical trials are carefully designed, highly regulated and constantly monitored. They are conducted at different geographical sites to ensure the right representative target populations are being evaluated. Before a clinical trial can start, the protocols to conduct the trial are carefully evaluated. They must be approved by independent ethics review boards and the appropriate regulatory agencies where the trials will be conducted.
